Teacher Certification Training

Northwestern Outdoor Leadership Institute (NOLI) Teacher Certification Training

Do You Want to Teach But Are Dismayed by What Has Become of the Teaching Profession?

Do you believe the standard model school does not truly prepare our students for success as adults?

Do you know kids that once had a thirst for learning, but now hate school?

Do you believe that students would be better served if they had a curriculum custom-designed to address their personal goals and learning styles?

Do you know teachers that had a love for teaching but now dread going to work?

Are you thinking of not entering the teaching profession or are thinking of leaving it because of these or other issues?

Are you thinking of leaving the teaching profesion?

There is a better way

More than 40-years ago, NOLI’s co-founder, Brian King saw the same issues and believed there was a better way. Brian researched and developed a pedagogy of best practices in teaching, addressing the above issues and much more. Twenty years later the time was right for Brian to take a leap of faith and created a proving ground for those best practices in education. From that work and with the help of Toni King, Northwestern Outdoor Leadership Institute’s schools and camps were born. It was a school where the kids woke their parents up so they would not be late. It was a school that both the students and teachers were engaged in and that they both loved.

Do You Want to Make a Difference?

How would you like to teach in a school where your students want to learn; a school where the students see the relevance in what they are learning? Do you believe you could make a big difference in a student’s life if your time was divided between only 7 students as opposed to 100 or more? During an internship at NOLI, you will learn and apply many best practices in education and will find not only is your teaching experience more productive, but more enjoyable.

Nine-Month Total Immersion Resident Teacher Training

Each teacher in training will have a custom curriculum developed for them to meet their personal goals and prepares them to be a core mentor at a NOLI School. The mentor candidate will be immersed in best practices of education leaning them on Thursday and Friday and applying them on Monday through Wednesday with the students.

Best Practices in Education

Being a teacher at NOLI does not look or feel like being a teacher in a public grade or high school. Your workday more resembles a university professor advising 7 postgraduate students. You will not have worksheets to grade, there are no grades, each student is responsible for journaling their goals, lesson plans, and mastery. You will not keep attendance records the students do that. There is no lectures but small group discussion. What do is become a master at coaching your students to learn and you will develop breadth and depth in what you teach. You will integrate the core subjects of math, science, English, etc., into what each has a passion and interest in. Since each student sees relevance in what they are learning they will have a thirst to learn. You will never hear, “Why do I have to learn this?” What you will hear is, “How do I do this?” “Can you watch me and tell me what I am doing wrong.” and oh, you, the most important thing you will hear is, “Thank you.” All the classroom management techniques that are required by teachers in the standard model school is not necessary and gets in the way of learning. This is a new paradigm that gives you and your students the skills, tools, and autonomy truly meet your students’ goals and do it in a fraction of the time it would take in the standard model school.

Wilderness and Homestead Training

Out of 180 days each school year your classroom is the wilderness for roughly 160 to 170 day, therefore you must become a master at wilderness skills, therefore, during your internship, you will earn the teaching certifications in a majority of the wilderness workshops that NOLI conducts. NOLI is an integrated small farm that the students and staff are involved the day to day running of the farm so therefore, you will also earn teaching certifications in the NOLI Homestead classes.

Further Opportunity for NOLI Teachers

By 2023, NOLI will open two additional accredited schools throughout the Northwest. To that end, we will need teachers and administrators to staff those schools, and we only hire staff we have trained.
